The biggest blessing

So, on this dreary September 1st day, I sit here and think about how blessed we really are.  I graduated last May with a bachelors degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education.  Before I was even handed my diploma, I had this yearning to have my own classroom and to fill it with all the cool teachery things I have accumulated over the years.  And if you know me, you would know that I have a TON of things for this “future” classroom. I mean, when your in college you kind get fed this line about being hired as soon as the new school year comes around….well sister/brother, that’s not always the case.  I know they do it so you get all excited, and well, in some cases you do get hired right after you graduate, but I’m just not the case.  I subbed a bunch right out of college, and then, was lucky enough to get Outdoor School out of it.  If your not from my county and are not familiar with Outdoor School….Its a week-long camp for fifth graders in Allegany County here in Maryland.  They stay in cabins, go on hikes everyday, fish, canoe, and so much more.  Did I mention that my child is in the fifth grade this year!!! She is nervous, but I know she will have a blast.  I also found out that she will be there with a school that she was at before we moved here.  This is so awesome because she will be with all of her old friends.

Umm…back on track!!!

I’m a scatter brain, I know!  Well, after Outdoor School I was offered a long-term substitution job for third grade.  That position was extended and I was able to stay for five months, until the end of the school year (last school year).  I thought for sure that I would have a position in the bag!  HA!  Nope!  No calls over the summer..nothing!  I’m totally over it now, but man oh man, was it rough.  That is about the time I found VIP Kid.  I saw it online, but thought it was too good to be true.  I bookmarked the page and went on with my business.  I completely forgot about it until I saw a teacher at my daughter’s school post about it on Facebook.  She had just signed up and was looking to recruit some new teachers.  I spoke to her about it and was reeled in…hook/line/sinker!  The rest is history!  Yeah right, that was ONLY 50 days ago.  I was hired on July 14th.  It took me almost a month to get hired.  I went through the whole process twice!! YES, TWICE!  I wasn’t hired the first go around.  I went through the interview, two mock classes, and then find out I wasn’t hired because I used too much incidental language and not enough TPR.

Guys, don’t give up on your dreams!  Do something everyday that scares you!  These are my mottos as of late.  I told myself that I WAS going to be a VIP Kid teacher, and that they were going to love me!  If you are having doubts about the company or any questions, for that matter….give me a shout out!  I will walk along with you and give you all the pointers to help guide you in the door.  This company has changed my perspective on things.  I thought for sure that I would have to be a teacher WITH a classroom in order to be an actual teacher.  Turns out, not so much.  I use my bachelors degree everyday when I travel to China.  I don’t have to leave my home, get dressed (well, you know what I mean), and don’t have to commute anywhere.  My commute time is 10 seconds!!!  Out of bed and up the stairs to my in-home classroom!

My husband was given to me or many reasons.  He keeps me straight and tells me like it is sometimes.  Last night we were talking before we went to bed and he was telling me to just be thankful for where I’m at now and for what I have.  I totally am, but I just need to hear it sometimes.  Someone to put me back into perspective.  I’ve only been doing this for a month and a half, but it has changed me in so many ways.  I am able to work from home and be here for my husband and daughter when they need me.  I am still able to teach!  I enjoy this more than you know!  It’s allowing me to pay my bills and to hopefully pay off debt…slowly but surely!

I had a goal for the month of August.  That goal was to make $1500.  I pulled through with $1630!!!! I worked my butt off and had many tiresome days, but my go my was it worth it!  I am hoping to reach 2k+ for September, so let’s get started!!

If you are doubting this company or have any questions at all…no matter how big or small….please reach out to me!  If you want to sign-up and apply, I can help you along the way.  I want you to be confident when you are going through your interview and mock classes. And of course…please use my link and referral code.  I get email updates about your progress and it can help me to help you!  I can also check on the teacher portal to see where you are in the system.

I hope to post more over the weekend.  I’m taking Saturday and Sunday off!  Did you hear me?  NO WORK FOR ME!  I worked 42 days straight.  I’m a little tired!

I’m out! Gonna eat some ice-cream and watch the news like a little old lady 🙂

My VIP Kid reward systems

Guys!! I’m a laminator junkie!!  I. WILL. LAMINATE. ALL. THE. THINGS!!!!  But seriously, I do laminate a lot.  I have created so many cool rewards for my VIP Kid babes.  They enjoy all of them, as much as I enjoyed making them.  All you need is a computer, printer, a laminator, magnets, a hot glue gun, and I use PowerPoint.  I have an iMac, so finding things online is so much easier.  I can take shots of anything and put it onto PowerPoint, to create a collage to print.  I find everything on Google (Love me some Google)!

Here are the rewards I currently use.  I’m in the process of making more 🙂

They are so easy to make!  I print them out, laminate them, and then put some magnets on the back.  I spray painted a cookie sheet I got from the Dollar General, so it would blend with the reward better.  I also didn’t have to buy magnets!  When I was in college, I had a professor tell us to save all random magnets we came across.  I had some really thick, advertising magnets that I cut up.  “If it’s free, it’s for me!” <<My motto!  And there you go! Some cute, easy to make, rewards your students will love.  Oh, and did I mention that I’m making more?  I’m making a Minecraft reward, a monkey with banana reward, something with Minions, a crazy eyed cat reward, and a Lisa Frank reward (<which I’m super excited for!!).  Did anyone else grow-up loving Lisa Frank as a child?

What the back looks like ^

This is how I store my rewards.  I found this makeup organizer at TJ Max a long time ago and decided it had better use for this.

And there you go!  I will post when I finish my new rewards.  I hope you enjoy and get some inspiration.  That’s what this blog is for after all 😉

This at-home teaching gig…

I have been teaching from home for a little over a month now.  It’s the absolute best! I don’t have to worry about childcare, getting dressed and out the door in a crazy frenzy…or wear a bra (sorry TMI :)). I work for this awesome company based in China called VIP Kid.  VIP Kid is a leading Chinese online education firm that offers an American elementary education experience to Chinese students aged 4-12. The youngest I have taught is five years old and the oldest was 12 years old.  I love every child I come in contact with.  They just have a way to brighten my day.  I just wish the drive for learning, the excitement of gaining knowledge, would make it’s way to the U.S.  I know it’s in their culture like cheeseburgers and fries are to us, in our DNA, but man oh man, it makes my time teaching them much more enjoyable because they just want to be there.

Well, there it is, folks!  My second post.  I created this blog to dump all the stuff that I have going on in my brain….and to hopefully help someone along the way.  I have so many ideas to share.  There’s just not enough time in the day for it.

Screen Shot 2017-08-19 at 8.24.45 PMI’ll hopefully get adjusted to this new way of thinking/talking…you know! Getting it all out there.  I will post pictures of my VIP Kid teacher life, my travels, share recipes, and well… my day to day life.
